P2P
File sharing is the process in which you send or allow
individuals to share information, documents, and spreadsheets and is mainly
used through applications like Google Drive, Dropbox, and other platforms.
These kind of file sharing platforms are important for everyone of all ages –
it helps individuals back up their information in a cloud based manner, makes
it easier and inspires collaboration amongst students when working on projects
or sharing notes for a class, and can be used in a business setting to drive
business results.
P2P, otherwise known as peer-to-peer distribution or file
sharing, allows individuals to share documents, information, videos, and other
forms of media and information through connecting to another computer and
database that is connected to the network. An example of a P2P site is the
Pirate Bay, a P2P portal with millions of unique daily users that illegally
distributes movies and other forms of media. The NMA staff discusses in “Content
producers should take advantage of P2P, not fear it” discusses how the owners
of a file sharing documentary Steal This Film were trying to interact with the
online community and receive monetary compensation through donations for their
work while continuing to promote their documentary through the P2P sharing
websites. It is an extremely interesting concept and the thought process behind
why the creator wants to utilize P2P as opposed to stay away from it is
extremely interesting.
You made a good distinction between file sharing and P2P. Although P2P is a form of file sharing you had great examples of the services that could be classified as either of them. I like how you bring up the positive aspect of P2P with distributing legal media, "Steal This Film".
